Yazanisaone-year-oldheartdiseasepatientinLibya.Hewasbornwithonlyoneoftheusualfourchambers,ormainparts,ofthehumanheart.HisheartpumpedsolittlebloodthatwhenYazancried,hisskinwouldturnblack.Herequiredanoperationtosurvive.ButLibyaonlyhasonedoctorthatdoessuchoperationsonyoungchildren.
About1,babieswithheartdefectsareborninLibyaeveryyear.Usually,aboutofthemareinurgentneedofheartoperations.Mostdonotgetthemandtheydieintheirfirstyear,saidWilliamNovick,achildren’sheartdoctorfromtheUnitedStates.
“Tomethisissimplyanunacceptablesituationthatneedsourattention,”saidNovick.
NovickleadsaninternationalteamofexpertscalledtheNovickCardiacAlliance.TheytraveltoLibyaoftentoperformoperationsonpatientslikeYazan.
Libyahasbeeninmajordisordersince,whenoppositionforcesoustedlong-timeleaderMuammarGadhafi.Armedconflictcontinuesinthecountrywithforeigncountriessupportingopposingarmedgroups.Thelatestfightingbeganlastspringandhaskilledhundredsofcivilians.
Theconflictalsohasseverelyaffectedhealthcareinthecountry.TheWorldHealthOrganizationdescribestheLibyanhealthcaresystemasoverworked,unproductiveandlackinginmedicineandequipment.
Novick’steamwasthebest,andperhapslast,hopeforYazan.Fortreatment,however,theboyandhisfamilyhadtotraveltothemostdangerousplaceinLibya,itscapitalTripoli.
Lastmonth,Yazanandhisfamilyarrivedinthecityaftera1,kilometertripfromtheirhomeinthedesert.OnFebruary26,Yazanhadafive-houroperationtobeginrepaironhisheart.Itwentwell.AlthoughYazanwillneedonemoreoperation,Novickandhisteamexpecthimtofullyrecover.
Novick’sgrouphastreated1,childreninLibyasinceitbegantreatmentstherein.
ButhisCardiacAlliancewasbornmuchearlier.
NovickwasamedicalstudentattheUniversityofAlabamawhenhefirstwitnessedthesufferingofchildrenbornwithheartdisease.Healsolearnedabouttheproblemsfamiliesexperiencetryingtogetcarefortheirchildren.Hedecidedthentoworktohelpchildrenwithheartproblemsnomatterwheretheyareborn.
Fornearly30years,Novickandhispartnershavemadehundredsoftripsto32countriesincludingUkraine,Nigeria,Iraq,IranandColombia.
FortheFebruaryvisittoLibya,Novick’steamincluded20volunteerdoctorsandnurses.Theteamperformed10difficultopen-heartoperationsinthecountry’swest.
Theteamworkedinareascontrolledbyeachofthetwomainarmedgroups.
Novicksaidthatamaingoalofhisgroupis“tobeapoliticalandhelpthechildren.”
Novick’sgroupalsotrainsLibyandoctorsandnursestodevelopthecountry’shealthcaresystem.
Hesaid,“We’renotgoingtobehereforeverandweshouldn’tbehereforever.”
